Barton Mine, also known as Net Lake Mine, is an abandoned underground mine in Cobalt Mining District of Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located on the west shore of the north arm of Net Lake in Temagami North.
Named for J.W. Barton of Toronto, the mine lies in quartz breccia and quartz veins cutting greenschist of the Temagami greenstone belt. A mine shaft was constructed around 1909 with a depth of 15 m (49 ft) and about 181 tons of rock was removed. The mined ore was not shipped during this period. At the time of World War I, J.W. Barton transported 550.8 kg (1,214 lb) of ore to the mine's branch in Ottawa for recovery of 42.6 kg (94 lb) of molybdenite. Subsequently, a fire devastated the mine site and boiler house then mining operations did not continue. Minerals present at the mine include pyrite, chalcopyrite and molybdenite.[1]
